Capsulitis of the foot is inflammation of the joint capsule — the thick tissue that surrounds and protects a joint — usually affecting the second toe joint but sometimes others as well. It’s often caused by abnormal foot mechanics, excessive pressure on the ball of the foot, bunions, or tight calf muscles.
